Vigno 2016

I tasted the 2016 Vigno because the last time it was not bottled (I tasted a cask sample of the 2017), and it was even unclear if this 2016 was ever going to be released and was bottled much later. 2016 was similar to 2018, cooler and rainier, and the wine reached 14% alcohol but kept a low pH (3.08) and high acidity (7.26 grams of tartaric acid). It fermented with indigenous yeast and matured in used barriques for 26 months. This is 100% Cariñena from Melozal in Maule with some smoky aromas, meaty and with hints of tree bark, earthy and a little rustic, somehow more old style, reminiscent of simple, pleasant wines that reflect the character of the places and variety. It feels very, very Cariñena, a textbook example of the variety with that combination of flowers and earth, elegant and rustic at the same time. A medium-bodied red with aromas of blackberries, kaffir lime leaf, rust, black and white pepper and wild herbs. Wild and crunchy with firm, tight-grained tannins and tangy acidity. Structured and very fresh. James Suckling June 2021

The 2016 Carignan VIGNO is 100% Carignan from vines planted in 1958 in Melozal, Maule, aged in used oak for 24 months under the oversight of oenologist Felipe García. Intense purple in hue. The attractive nose features sour cherry and blackberry plus nutmeg and mint aromas. Juicy with a medium structure, the flavors are potent with frisky acidity and an intense, muscular feel followed by a prolix finish. Vinous May 2021
